The Old West
Around 1881 Durango Colorado was a very important place. Gold and Silver were discovered up the Animas River near Silverton Colorado. The San Juan Mountains were attracting prospectors rapidly and they all needed a way to get from Durango to Silverton and carry all their equipment for prospecting. The Durango And Silverton Narrow gauge railroad was born, it had to traverse the Animas River edge for about 50 miles, it was a beautiful, but very exciting ride along the rock cliffs and fast mountain river water. The train was a narow gauge allowing for less removal of the mountains as it gradually pulled up the river to Silverton. Silverton was a fast growing community at the time and still reflects the ways of that era. It's quite a place to visit today and a train ride we will not soon forget.
